Meet Barry

Environment>Meet Barry

Barry the Mountain Pygmy-possum is Mt Buller's environmental mascot, who is helping Mt Buller to raise awareness about the natural alpine environment, recycling and keeping winter cool.

If you're lucky, you might see Barry wandering around the Mt Buller Village or tearing through the terrain park on his snowboard.

While Barry is big and tall, the rest of his Mountain Pygmy-possum family is very small, weighing only 35 – 45 grams – about the same weight as a chocolate bar! Their bodies are about 10cm long and they have tails that are around 14cm long and usually curled at the end.

Mountain Pygmy-possums eat Bogong Moths all summer as they need to fatten up in preparation for hibernation during winter. They also top up their food with the fruit of the Mountain Plum-pine and assorted other seeds from heath species. Their front teeth are enlarged, for cracking seeds.

Then they sleep in the boulderfields under the snow from as early as March through to September - too much noise can wake them up!

Mountain Pygmy Possums are one of the only hibernating marsupials in the world!
